Abstract

The article presents the genesis of learning management systems (LMS) and their development in education at the end of the 20th century first quarter of the 21st century. Three main periods of this development process are characterized: the first period (1990–2001) the emergence of learning management systems; the second period (2002–2007) the emergence of open-source learning management systems; the third period (2008 present) the emergence of cloud-based open-source learning management systems. It is concluded that learning management systems have demonstrated reliability and stability over their short history; meanwhile, the adaptability of the systems themselves increases their chances of further use in the field of education and corporate training. The number of LMS users can double in size by the beginning of the 2030s.
