Abstract

The article, based on publications in the pre-revolutionary journal «Otechestvennye zapiski», analyzes the problem of transformation the political and legal system of mountain society in the context of incorporating the region into Russia in the 19th century. The author claims that the publishing concept of the journal, aimed at exploring the little-studied corners of the Russian Empire, led to the preservation of a huge range of materials about the peoples of the North Caucasus, including the control system in the region, which requires serious historiographical analysis.
